Kai Trump Experiences Challenges in LPGA Debut

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Kai Trump, the granddaughter of former U.S. President Donald Trump, made her LPGA debut at The Annika tournament. Competing on a sponsor’s exemption, the 18-year-old amateur faced considerable scrutiny prior to the event. Her first-round score of 83, translating to 13-over-par, placed her at the bottom of the field; nevertheless, her appearance became a highly discussed highlight of the day.

Beginning her round on the back nine, Trump was paired with major champion Hinako Shibuno and German golfer Olivia Cowan. She received an enthusiastic welcome that quickly transformed into anxiety as she bogeyed her initial four holes, revealing tension in her short game. She later remarked that her nerves surpassed those she felt while addressing the Republican National Convention.

After a shaky start, Trump achieved stability with a par on the par-5 14th and showcased her resilience with a well-executed up-and-down on the par-3 16th hole, eliciting cheers from the crowd. Completing her first nine holes at a score of 41, she demonstrated glimpses of her potential to recover from setbacks.

Support from her mother, Vanessa, and her future coach, Jim Garren, from the University of Miami, lent her encouragement. Just one day prior, she had committed to play golf for Miami in the 2026–27 season. Her group drew the day’s largest gallery, combining supporters and critics alike, a reflection of the heightened interest surrounding her appearance.

Despite strong public interest, the LPGA broadcast concluded shortly after Trump finished her first hole, surprising many fans. Nevertheless, she attracted a large audience, with followers lining the fairways throughout her round, amplifying the significance of the occasion.

Things did not improve much for Trump on the back nine. Following a double-bogey immediately after the turn, the toughest moment arrived at the par-4 eighth when she topped an iron shot, inciting gasps from onlookers. Yet, she rebounded with her best swing of the day, landing close to the hole. She concluded with two additional bogeys, wrapping up her round at 83, the day's highest score.

Post-game, Trump expressed her continuous nervousness but felt she managed the pressure well given it was her inaugural professional event. She reminded everyone she was the youngest player in the field and recognized the experience as a learning opportunity, vowing to enhance her short game and putting skills.

Her participation sparked dialogue within the golf community. Some believed her presence generated excitement, especially alongside WNBA star Caitlin Clark in the pro-am. Others, however, questioned whether her ranking of No. 461 in the American Junior Golf Association warranted a spot in a pivotal end-of-season tournament. Tournament host Annika Sorenstam urged critics to “give this girl a chance.”

Club owner Dan Doyle Jr noted that Trump’s entry significantly boosted interest, especially on social media, where she boasts over nine million followers. She also mentioned receiving advice from her grandfather to ease her nerves and encouragement from Tiger Woods to “go with the flow.”

While Trump faced difficulties, professional players displayed exceptional skills, with South Korea’s Ryu Hae-ran leading the day with a six-under-par 64. Australia’s Grace Kim trailed by one stroke, and Jennifer Kupcho was just two strokes behind, highlighting the competitive gap between experienced professionals and emerging amateurs.
