Kamal Haasan Advocates for Indie Cinema Freedom at IFFI 2025

Post by : Meena Hassan

Kamal Haasan, the veteran actor, spoke passionately about the hurdles independent cinema faces in India, emphasizing its distinctiveness and freedom at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 held in Goa.

As he graced the red carpet ahead of his latest film Amaran's screening, Haasan remarked, “Independent cinema embodies true freedom, as free as India itself... do not confine it within the parameters of commercial cinema.”

At 71, Haasan is celebrated for his significant contributions to Tamil cinema, blending experimental and conventional filmmaking through classics like Apoorva Raagangal, Nayakan, Thevar Magan, and Sadma. He further emphasized that indie films should not be subjected to the norms of commercial cinema, recognizing the enduring issue of limited availability in theaters, stating, “That has been my concern for nearly 40 years now.”

He was accompanied on the red carpet by stars Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi from Amaran. The film showcases the life of Major Mukund Vardharajan, who lost his life in action in Kashmir in 2014, and serves as the opening feature for the 56th IFFI.

Based on the book India's Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, the film continues Haasan's legacy. His previous appearance was in Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, a collaboration after almost 40 years, though it did not fare well commercially.
