In a gripping matchup on Tuesday night in Oxford, Mississippi, Ole Miss achieved an 83-77 victory over Memphis, maintaining their perfect record of 3-0 for the season. The game showcased an impressive display by senior guard Ilias Kamardine, who led all scorers with 26 points, marking a pivotal performance for the Rebels.
Kamardine’s prowess was evident as he showcased remarkable shooting, hitting 11 out of 14 field goals. He made 16 of his total points in the initial half, exploiting gaps in the Memphis defense. As the game progressed, Kamardine asserted his dominance, stepping up during crucial moments when the Rebels needed baskets.
In addition to Kamardine’s stellar performance, his teammates contributed significantly. Kezza Giffa added 15 points and dished out five assists, proving instrumental in keeping the Rebels ahead during critical stretches. With 13 points and six rebounds, Malik Dia also played a crucial role, providing energy and strength in the paint. Together, they helped Ole Miss maintain their lead despite Memphis's attempts to surge back.
Although Memphis put forth a commendable effort, their struggles in the second half proved detrimental. Curtis Givens III led the Tigers, scoring 20 points, while Ashton Hardaway impressed off the bench with 16 points on an efficient shooting night. Dug McDaniel contributed with a solid stat line, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
The first half was marked by a back-and-forth exchange of baskets, with a tying score of 17 thanks to McDaniel. However, Memphis hit a scoring drought lasting over three minutes, allowing Ole Miss to mount a lead at 23-17. The Rebels concluded the half strong, capped by consecutive three-pointers from Travis Perry and Giffa, ending the half with a 42-33 advantage.
Kamardine’s late first-half surge, scoring nine points in a row, frustrated Memphis's defense and pushed Ole Miss ahead decisively. While Hardaway responded with 11 points in the first half, the balance of the Rebels’ offense proved too much for the Tigers to handle. The home crowd was energized as Ole Miss retained a nine-point lead at halftime.
In the second half, Ole Miss maintained their grip on the game, not allowing Memphis to take the lead. They increased their advantage to 70-59 with a basket from Giffa. Even though Memphis made a late attempt to narrow the score, Ole Miss remained composed. The Tigers only managed to reduce the gap to four points on two occasions in the final moments, but key plays from Ole Miss secured the win.
AJ Storr, the Kansas transfer averaging 18.5 points per game, had a quieter night but still played a vital role, scoring 10 points, including two crucial free throws that clinched the victory for Ole Miss. His ability to perform under pressure ensured that Memphis could not mount a decisive comeback.
This victory continued Ole Miss's favorable history against Memphis, marking their seventh consecutive win in this rivalry since 2016. Memphis remains in search of their first win in Oxford since 2005. For Ole Miss, this victory further establishes their winning momentum and showcases the synergy between seasoned players and emerging talent against formidable opponents.
