Kami Rita Calls for Climbing Limits on Everest

Post by : Shakul

Renowned Sherpa climber Kami Rita Sherpa has urged Nepalese authorities to implement stricter restrictions on climber numbers on Mount Everest following his record 32nd summit. The experienced mountaineer highlighted that the increasing density of climbers poses heightened risks to everyone on the mountain.

After returning to Kathmandu, Kami Rita discussed the alarming congestion seen this climbing season, noting it was far more crowded than in years past. Long queues at summit points arose due to limited favorable weather conditions for ascents.

This year's climbing season has attracted an unusually high influx of climbers on the Nepal route, especially since China closed access from the Tibet side. Nepal’s authorities issued permits to 494 climbers, nearly equaled by the Sherpa guides supporting them.

On a record-setting Wednesday, 274 climbers reached the summit from Nepal, representing the highest daily ascents ever recorded. Experts caution that such heavy traffic at extreme altitudes can lead to perilous delays, which expose climbers to severe cold, diminished oxygen, and unpredictable weather.

Kami Rita pointed out that the increased traffic creates critical safety threats as climbers endure lengthy waits while secured to fixed ropes near steep areas, increasing chances for exhaustion, frostbite, and altitude-related illnesses.

At age 56, Kami Rita is recognized as one of the foremost high-altitude guides globally. His first ascent of Everest occurred in 1994, and he has been active nearly every year since. He has also summited notable Himalayan peaks such as K2, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, and Lhotse.

Close competitor Pasang Dawa Sherpa recently achieved his 31st summit of Everest this week, highlighting the impressive feats of Nepal’s Sherpa community. These guides are essential to the safety and success of international climbers, managing ropes, equipment, and navigating treacherous areas of the mountain.

Concerns from environmentalists and climbing experts about overcrowding and the environmental impacts on Everest have been rising. Many advocate for tighter control over permits and enhanced safety regulations to safeguard both climbers and the delicate Himalayan ecosystem.
