Kamini Kaushal, a revered figure in Bollywood whose career lasted over seventy years, has died at 98 in her Mumbai home late Thursday night. A family associate confirmed her passing.
Sajan Narain, a family friend, stated, “She passed away at her residence in Mumbai on Thursday night. She was approaching her 99th birthday in February.” The family has not disclosed the cause of death, nor have they released an official announcement.
Known for her brilliance, Kamini Kaushal is considered one of the finest actresses in Indian film history. Born in Lahore, she was the daughter of Prof. Shiv Ram Kashyap, a prominent botanist associated with the University of Punjab, often referred to as the Father of Indian Bryology.
Her film career took off when she was cast in Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar (1946), which won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This marked her as a noteworthy newcomer in Indian cinema and earned accolades at the Montreal Film Festival.
During the late 1940s and 1950s, Kamini featured in several hit films, including Aag, Shaheed, Nadiya Ke Paar, and Ziddi, quickly becoming one of the era's top-earning actresses. She shared the screen with legendary stars like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor, achieving both critical and audience acclaim.
In 1963, she transitioned to character roles, delighting audiences with memorable performances in films such as Do Raaste, Prem Nagar, and Maha Chor. Even later in her career, she remained prominent, appearing in commercial hits like Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express and Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh, with her final role being a cameo in Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha.
Kamini Kaushal’s impact on Indian cinema is profound. Celebrated not only for her charm and elegance but also for her versatility, she brought depth to every character. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire new generations of actors in Bollywood.
