Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Kansas State kicked off the match with high enthusiasm and effective scoring, which set the pace for the contest, particularly in the first half where their shooting was exceptional. The Wildcats quickly gained momentum, displaying confidence on both offence and defence. Their precise shooting and fluid ball movement allowed them early control of the game.

P.J. Haggerty emerged as a key player, contributing 23 vital points and hitting crucial shots at pivotal moments. His consistent scoring helped Kansas State maintain its edge, even as Cal sought to narrow the gap. Haggerty’s composed performance and steady shooting were instrumental in clinching the victory.

Khamari McGriff provided significant support, adding 21 points. His physicality around the rim and knack for completing challenging plays energized Kansas State whenever Cal threatened to gain momentum.
Nate Johnson also had a strong outing, scoring 20 points and playing a crucial role during a 9-0 run in the early second half that saw their lead swell to 24 points. His timely baskets kept Kansas State comfortably ahead for the majority of the game.

David Castillo, coming off the bench, scored 16 points and shined from beyond the arc, converting 4 of his 6 three-point attempts. His outstanding shooting from long range has been a recent highlight, as he has made 9 of his last 11 attempts in previous games, solidifying his role as a reliable scorer for Kansas State.

Despite Kansas State's dominance in the first half, Cal returned as a revitalized team after the break. They outscored Kansas State 62-44 in the second half, making the contest far more competitive than anticipated. Chris Bell was outstanding with 27 points, while Dai Dai Ames chipped in 25 points alongside seven assists and five steals, propelling Cal to claw back into contention.

With about nine minutes remaining, Cal cut the deficit to just 13 points. Kansas State attempted to respond, with Johnson adding five points to increase their lead. Yet Cal fought back, reducing the margin to 10 points with just over three minutes left. Kansas State worked hard to hold their lead as Cal kept pushing.

In the final minute, Cal closed the gap further with Bell hitting a deep three-pointer, making it 98-92 with just 38 seconds on the clock. Haggerty made one of two from the charity stripe, but Cal managed a couple of late dunks to narrow the score. However, Kansas State held on tight to secure a thrilling 99-96 win.

Kansas State laid the groundwork for their large lead with a transformative 13-0 run, turning a 9-5 deficit into an 18-9 advantage. Strong contributions from McGriff, Johnson, and Haggerty enabled them to reach a substantial lead of 47-22. This early advantage proved crucial in weathering Cal's late-game push.

Ultimately, Kansas State secured a hard-won 99-96 victory in a match that showcased remarkable individual performances and dramatic twists. Their dominant first half enabled them to remain in the lead, while Cal’s resurgence nearly altered the outcome. Kansas State’s well-balanced scoring and initial dominance were key in achieving this vital nonconference win.
