The PGA Tour has officially canceled The Sentry, the season-opening event, due to severe drought impacting the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui, Hawaii. After extensive assessments, officials concluded the course couldn't meet the professional standards necessary for tournament play. Attempts to find a suitable replacement venue were unsuccessful, prompting a shift in the Tour’s schedule.
Severe drought conditions have wreaked havoc on the Plantation Course's greens and fairways, leaving many areas unplayable. The strict water restrictions on the island hampered irrigation efforts, complicating recovery of the turf. Consequently, the once vibrant course landscape has turned dry and parched. The PGA Tour found that significant repairs were needed for the greens on both holes 1 and 8 and that these couldn’t be completed in time for competition.
In a positive development, Kapalua Golf's General Manager Alex Nakajima announced that the Plantation Course will reopen for public play as of Monday, November 10. This follows two months of dedicated maintenance and partial restoration efforts. Nakajima expressed gratitude to the agronomy team and noted that the reopening is crucial for the local economy and the over 300 employees working at the course and its restaurants.
Nakajima stressed the reopening's significance for Maui's economy, emphasizing that golf tourism is vital for local employment and businesses. “Reopening the Plantation Course is a meaningful step for our community,” he remarked, adding that visitors will once again be able to experience the scenic allure of one of Hawaii’s most memorable golfing locales.
While the course will be welcoming guests, only 16 of its 18 holes will be available for play initially. Troon Golf, which oversees operations at Kapalua, has shared updates indicating improvement in the turf's condition since September, although full restoration is still in progress. Tee times will become available on October 23, featuring a promotional reopening fee of $399, down from the regular price of $469. Additionally, guests will receive a $50 golf shop credit due to the temporary closure of two holes.
With the cancellation of The Sentry, the PGA Tour will now kick off its 2026 season with the Sony Open in Honolulu, slated for January 15–18 at Waialae Country Club. PGA Tour Chief Competitions Officer Tyler Dennis acknowledged the collaborative efforts with Sentry Insurance to identify alternatives but stated they were unable to find a feasible solution. He expressed gratitude to Sentry for their continued partnership amidst the circumstances.
Recent rainfall and updated irrigation regulations have aided recovery efforts, with Maui officials recently adjusting water restrictions to “Tier 2,” allowing 60 percent irrigation, thus accelerating restoration. While full recovery may take time, noticeable progress brings hope for the Plantation Course's complete revival. The Bay Course at Kapalua remains closed until further notice.
The reopening of the Plantation Course represents a symbol of hope for both Kapalua Golf and the wider Maui community. Although The Sentry won't take place this year, the course’s gradual restoration highlights resilience and commitment. With ongoing support from visitors and players, the Plantation Course is expected to regain its esteemed status and continue boosting Hawaii’s thriving golf tourism.
