Karachi, Pakistan – Heavy rains and strong winds battered Pakistan’s largest city overnight, killing at least 15 people and injuring more than two dozen, officials said Thursday.
The storm, which began Wednesday, caused walls and roofs to collapse at multiple locations. Emergency services rushed the injured to hospitals, while police and rescue teams worked to clear fallen trees and debris from the streets.
At least 15 bodies were brought to the city’s main hospital. Injured residents received treatment for various storm-related injuries, according to police surgeon Summaiya Tariq and emergency officials.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported winds reaching up to 90 kph (56 mph) that lasted for several hours. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, warning that many roads were blocked by fallen trees.
Forecasters warned that more rain, strong winds, and isolated hailstorms could continue in Karachi and other parts of Sindh province as a westerly weather system moves across the region.
Heavy rain and storms also affected other areas across Pakistan, as reported by emergency services. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assist affected residents.
