Karan Johar Discusses How Childhood Experiences Influence His Parenting

Post by : Meena Hassan

Bollywood's Karan Johar has candidly shared insights into how his past experiences with bullying have profoundly influenced his parenting style. In a heartfelt dialogue with Sania Mirza on her podcast Serving It Up with Sania, Karan opened up about how the emotional scars from his youth have made him overly cautious about his twins, Yash and Roohi Johar, and their interactions with the world.

Having faced bullying for his weight during school, Karan spoke about the lasting effects of those experiences in his recent interview. “As a plus-size child, I faced constant taunts,” he recalled. “I was labeled as someone unfit for sports. Those memories linger on,” he added.

Karan’s insights reveal how his childhood trauma has left him with deep-seated insecurities that influence his parenting today. “I worry that my children might gain weight,” he confessed. “I tell them, 'Don't eat sugar,' while wanting to free them from such fears.”

This inner conflict manifests in his parenting approach, oscillating between strictness and empathy. “I strive to maintain balance,” he shared. “While I emphasize discipline, I also fear passing on my anxieties.”

Karan also voiced concerns regarding social media's impact on self-image among children. He described the online space as “dark and detrimental,” highlighting how it exacerbates insecurities. “Kids today face immense pressure over their appearances,” he remarked. “Feeling 'not good enough' can significantly affect their confidence.”

Reflecting on his own childhood, he compared it to the pressures faced by today's children, noting, “Children now are judged more harshly for their differences, which is disheartening.”

Karan has even modified his personal style to avoid embarrassing his twins, stating, “I usually enjoy bold fashion, but I’ve toned it down to prevent them from being teased.” Furthermore, he aims to protect them from any unflattering online content.

His aspirations for Yash and Roohi emphasize kindness and acceptance towards others. “I want them to embrace diversity, just as I wished to be accepted in my youth,” Karan expressed.

Since becoming a single father via surrogacy in February 2017, Karan has consistently celebrated fatherhood. He often shares heartfelt family moments, showcasing the joy and responsibilities that come with parenting. Yet, as his recent views illustrate, he grapples with his past while embracing these new roles.

Karan Johar’s candidness is a refreshing change in an industry often overshadowed by superficiality. His revelations underline the significant repercussions of childhood bullying and the challenges of parenting in today’s digital landscape. “I continue to learn daily,” he stated. “There's no handbook for parenting; what matters is adaptability and ensuring your children feel cherished.”

Professionally, Karan remains a key player in Bollywood, with his upcoming project, Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, set to release on December 25. The film will star Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, and face off against a major release by YRF.

As Karan navigates his flourishing career alongside the challenges of parenthood, his journey serves as a reminder that even the most successful individuals carry their emotional battles—true strength is often in facing them head-on.
