Kasim Khan, the son of former Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan, has voiced grave concerns regarding his father's treatment at Adiala Jail, alleging that he is enduring “inhumane isolation,” a practice not typically found in standard security procedures. These allegations arise amid rampant online speculation about Imran Khan's health and rumors, including unsubstantiated reports of his death in custody.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Kasim pointed out that it has been 845 days since his father's imprisonment. He mentioned that for the last six weeks, Imran Khan has been alone in what is termed a “death cell,” devoid of family contact. He highlighted that, despite court orders, his sisters are prevented from visiting him, and neither he nor his brother have been able to communicate with their father.
Kasim condemned this treatment, asserting that the complete isolation is a calculated effort to obscure his father's condition and maintain the family's ignorance about his safety. He warned that the Pakistani government and those accountable will face full legal, moral, and international responsibility for his father's welfare and for any repercussions stemming from this cruel confinement.
He has called on the global community and human rights organizations to take action, demanding confirmation of Imran Khan's safety, adherence to court-ordered family access, an immediate cessation of solitary confinement, and the release of the former Prime Minister, whom he characterized as being imprisoned for political reasons.
Imran Khan's sister, Aleema Khanum, corroborated that the family has repeatedly encountered obstacles in trying to see him. She noted that over the last six to seven months, attempts at family visits have frequently been denied, with sporadic meetings often cancelled without notice, resulting in considerable distress for the family.
However, the authorities at Adiala Jail have dismissed claims of mistreatment and rumors regarding Imran Khan's death. They issued a statement asserting that the former Prime Minister is in “completely good health” and is receiving necessary care, labeling the reports about any transfer to another facility as unfounded.
Since August 2023, Imran Khan has been in custody facing multiple charges he asserts are politically charged. Earlier, in January, he was convicted of corruption and sentenced to 14 years, while his wife was sentenced to seven years. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), his political party, had previously alleged that he was kept in solitary confinement in a death cell even prior to his conviction, amplifying concerns regarding his treatment in prison.
This situation has reignited discussions surrounding the treatment of political figures in Pakistan, garnering attention from both national and international human rights advocates as family members and supporters continue their calls for proof of life and equitable treatment for Imran Khan.
