The West Indies cricket team has revealed a 15-member squad ahead of their three-Test tour to New Zealand, set to occur from December 1 to 21, 2025. A standout feature of this squad is the comeback of seasoned fast bowler Kemar Roach, brought back to enhance the team's pace contingent. This decision comes as two main fast bowlers, Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph, are currently sidelined due to injuries.
At 37 years old, Kemar Roach hasn't played Test cricket since January; however, he stands as one of the most seasoned bowlers in West Indies cricket. With a record of 85 Test matches and 284 wickets, Roach offers vital experience at a time when the team will be contending in New Zealand, where the conditions typically favour fast bowlers. The pitches there are known for assisting seam and swing bowling, making Roach's presence a crucial advantage.
Joining Roach is an exciting new talent—Ojay Shields. At 29, this fast bowler earns his first selection and may make his international debut during this tour if given the opportunity. Shields has shown impressive performance in domestic cricket, and there's a belief that he can adapt to tough overseas conditions. This tour serves as a significant chance for him to demonstrate his skills and aid the team.
Miles Bascombe, the director of cricket at Cricket West Indies (CWI), articulated the reasoning behind these selections. He acknowledged that New Zealand's fast and bouncy pitches pose challenges for visitors, prompting selectors to strategically prepare players for these circumstances. Bascombe noted that a high-performance training camp in Antigua was aligned with creating conditions similar to those anticipated in New Zealand, aiming to fine-tune bowlers for pace and acclimatise batters to the type of movement they'll face.
The squad also marks the return of middle-order batsman Kavem Hodge, selected for his recent solid form, while spin bowler Khary Pierre was left out, reflecting the assessment that spin is unlikely to play a significant role due to the nature of New Zealand pitches.
The Test series forms part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship. Currently, the West Indies are at the bottom of the standings after five matches played, while New Zealand have yet to participate in any Test series within this championship cycle. Thus, this series is critical for both teams in their quest to enhance their rankings early in the competition.
The tour will unfold across three cities in New Zealand—Christchurch, Wellington, and Mount Maunganui—each offering unique playing conditions, requiring strong performances from both experienced and emerging players for West Indies success.
