The African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 is a major football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This year, the tournament was special because it was co-hosted by three East African countries: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Football fans across the continent were excited as this was the first time East Africa was getting such a big chance to host the tournament. For the co-host nations, there was added pressure and expectation. People hoped Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda would do well and make their home fans proud.
Kenya and Tanzania, however, faced heartbreak in the quarter finals. Both nations could not progress further, despite strong performances and loud home support. Kenya lost on penalties to Madagascar in Nairobi, while Tanzania was beaten 1-0 by Morocco in Dar es Salaam. This news left their supporters disappointed but also proud of how far their teams had come.
Kenya’s Quarter Final Match in Nairobi
Kenya’s national team, the Harambee Stars, faced Madagascar in the quarter final played at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. The match started with a lot of energy as home fans filled the stadium with songs, drums, and cheers. Everyone hoped Kenya would advance further since they were playing at home.
The first half of the match ended goalless, even though both teams tried to score. After the break, Kenya finally found a breakthrough. In the 48th minute, defender Boniface Muchiri scored, sending the crowd into wild celebrations. The noise in the stadium showed how much this goal meant to the Kenyan fans.
But the joy did not last long. In the 66th minute, Madagascar equalized through Fenohasina Razafimaro. He scored from the penalty spot after Kenya’s defense committed a foul in the box. The 1-1 scoreline brought more tension to the game. Kenya tried hard to attack and get another goal, but Madagascar defended strongly and stopped all attempts.
The Tense Penalty Shoot-Out in Nairobi
With the match ending 1-1 after normal time, it had to be decided through penalties. This is always a nerve-wracking moment for both players and fans. Madagascar scored most of their penalties confidently. Kenya, however, missed two important chances. Mike Kibwage’s penalty was saved by Madagascar goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa, while Alphonce Omija also failed to score.
The shoot-out ended 4-3 in favor of Madagascar. Kenyan players fell to the ground in disappointment while the visiting team celebrated their big win. It was a tough moment for the Harambee Stars and their fans.
Coach Benni McCarthy Reacts to Kenya’s Loss
After the match, Kenya’s head coach, Benni McCarthy, spoke to reporters. He said the team had played with passion but luck was not on their side. “It was not our day today. I thank the players for playing their hearts out and the fans for giving the team all the support,” McCarthy said.
His words showed how much effort the Kenyan players had put into the game. Although they lost, they showed great determination and entertained their supporters. For the fans, it was a painful exit, but many felt proud of how their team fought until the very end.
Tanzania’s Quarter Final in Dar es Salaam
While Kenya was battling Madagascar, Tanzania’s Taifa Stars faced Morocco at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. The stadium was full of Tanzanian fans waving flags and chanting songs of encouragement. The Taifa Stars entered the match with confidence, having already won three games, drawn one, and lost only one in the tournament.
In the first half, Tanzania created several good scoring chances. Players like Clement Nzize and midfielder Feisal Salum came close to scoring but were unable to find the target. Their shots either went wide or were saved by Morocco’s goalkeeper.
Morocco’s Winning Goal
After halftime, Morocco looked stronger and more organized. They started pressing forward and finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute. Oussama Lamlaoui scored the only goal of the match for Morocco, silencing the Tanzanian crowd. Despite their best efforts, Tanzania could not equalize. Morocco defended well and held onto their 1-0 lead until the final whistle.
For Tanzania, it was a painful loss, especially since they had played in front of their home fans. But the team’s performance throughout the tournament showed they had improved and could compete at a higher level.
Coach Hamad Suleiman Proud Despite Defeat
After the match, Tanzania’s head coach, Hamad Suleiman, spoke about the game. He congratulated Morocco for their win but also praised his players for their hard work. “We congratulate Morocco for advancing to the next level, but I also thank my players for working hard to reach this far,” said Suleiman.
He reminded Tanzanians that the team had managed three wins, one draw, and only two losses in the tournament. This was seen as a good sign for the future of Tanzanian football. Even though they did not reach the semi-finals, the Taifa Stars earned respect for their fighting spirit.
What’s Next in the Tournament
With Kenya and Tanzania now out of the competition, attention turns to the remaining teams. Action will continue in Kampala, Uganda, where the other co-host nation, Uganda, faces reigning champions Senegal at the Nelson Mandela Stadium. This match is highly anticipated because Senegal is one of the strongest teams in Africa, and Uganda will have the home advantage.
At the same time, another quarter final match will take place in Zanzibar, where Sudan will battle Algeria at the Amaan Stadium. Both matches will decide the final spots in the semi-finals of CHAN 2024.
Lessons for Kenya and Tanzania
For Kenya, the main lesson was the need for stronger finishing and calmness during penalty shoot-outs. The Harambee Stars showed good teamwork and determination, but small mistakes cost them the match. Playing at home also brought pressure, and the team will learn how to handle such situations in the future.
For Tanzania, the lesson was about taking chances. They created several opportunities but failed to score, and in football, missed chances often lead to defeat. Their journey to the quarter finals, however, showed that the Taifa Stars are improving and can compete against top African teams.
Support and Pride from Fans
Despite the losses, fans in both Kenya and Tanzania showed great love for their teams. The stadiums were full, and the support was loud and colorful. Even after the defeats, many fans stayed behind to clap and encourage the players. This shows how football brings people together and creates national pride.
For many, the fact that East Africa hosted CHAN 2024 was already a big achievement. The players may have been knocked out, but the experience will help them improve in future competitions.
The CHAN 2024 quarter finals brought heartbreak for co-hosts Kenya and Tanzania as both teams were knocked out. Kenya lost to Madagascar in a penalty shoot-out, while Tanzania fell 1-0 to Morocco. Despite the defeats, both teams won respect for their efforts and gave their fans memorable moments.
Now, the focus shifts to Uganda, Senegal, Sudan, and Algeria as the tournament continues. For East Africa, hosting CHAN 2024 remains a proud moment, and the hope is that the experience will inspire stronger performances in the future.
