Kerala Welcomes Southwest Monsoon After Late Arrival

Post by : Shakul

Kerala has officially welcomed the southwest monsoon, as confirmed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This pivotal rainy season commenced on June 4, a delay of three days past the usual start date of June 1, following a previous forecast by the department.

With the onset of the monsoon, significant rainfall has swept through various regions of Kerala. The IMD issued orange alerts in several districts, warning residents of possible heavy downpours and disruptions.

Meteorologists attribute the monsoon's arrival to suitable atmospheric conditions facilitating its advancement into Kerala, Lakshadweep, parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and areas over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Experts predict that this weather system will move northward in the coming days, enhancing rainfall in more regions nationwide.

The persistent rains have begun to affect daily living, particularly in Idukki district, where a multi-storey building under construction collapsed due to the severe weather; fortunately, no casualties were reported. Authorities are vigilantly observing high-risk areas as rainfall intensifies.

The monsoon is crucial for India's agricultural framework, heavily reliant on seasonal rains for crop growth. This period is closely monitored by farmers, water resource managers, and policymakers, given its impact on food production, reservoir levels, rural incomes, and active economic conditions.

Other regions in the country are also under weather alerts, anticipating thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. In contrast, Delhi experienced light rain, cooling temperatures after a prolonged phase of warm and humid weather.

Despite the delayed arrival, the IMD expects seasonal rainfall for 2026 to remain around normal levels. Authorities have urged residents in alert zones to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions as the monsoon intensifies across India in the upcoming weeks.
