Australian batsman Usman Khawaja will miss the second Test at the Gabba due to ongoing back spasms suffered in the opening match at Perth. Although he returned to nets for a 30-minute session, Khawaja has not fully recovered and will continue his rehabilitation with the team. No replacement has been named in the squad.
His absence allows Travis Head to continue as an opener, following his strong performance in Perth where he scored 123 runs off just 83 balls in the second innings. Other batting options in the squad include Josh Inglis and Beau Webster, with Inglis recently scoring a century against England Lions, while Webster narrowly missed out on playing in Perth.
The third Test in Adelaide begins on December 17, giving Khawaja two weeks to recover. However, questions remain about whether he will reclaim his spot if Head and the incoming batsmen perform well. Khawaja’s form had been under scrutiny before the series, with an average of 31.84 since the 2023 Ashes and only one century in 45 innings.
Khawaja initially suffered the injury on the opening day at Perth Stadium. England collapsed quickly, and Khawaja could not open due to time off the field. When he batted at No. 4, he scored only 2 runs before being dismissed by Brydon Carse. On the second day, he fielded at first slip, taking a catch but then straining his back while attempting another catch, which led to Head’s remarkable century opportunity.
The ongoing injury raises the possibility that Khawaja’s Test career could be under review, especially if Head and other players maintain strong performances in his absence. The team management will monitor his recovery closely before making decisions about future selections.
The situation highlights the physical demands of international cricket and the challenges players face in returning from injury while under pressure to perform. Khawaja’s recovery and performance in Adelaide will be crucial for determining his role in upcoming matches and potentially his long-term future in the Australian Test team.
Khawaja’s absence has created a chance for other players to cement their positions, showing the competitive nature of selection and the importance of form and fitness at the highest level of cricket.
