Anthony Kim Rallies With 64 at Saudi Invitational, Eyes Return to LIV Golf

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

On Friday, Anthony Kim made significant strides in his golf career at the PIF Saudi Invitational in Riyadh, delivering an impressive, bogey-free round of 7-under-par 64, marking his finest score since returning to the professional scene. This stellar performance placed him at 11-under overall, tying him for third midway through the tournament.

The PIF Saudi Invitational, being the last event in The International Series on the Asian Tour, holds immense significance. The top two finishers in the rankings will secure direct entry to the LIV Golf League for the 2026 season, while those finishing within the top 40 will qualify for the LIV Golf Promotions event in January, where two additional spots in LIV Golf are up for grabs. Therefore, every stroke counts this week.

For Kim, this tournament isn't just another competition; it's a crucial pathway back to LIV Golf, where he previously played as a Wild Card until being relegated in 2025. Joining LIV Golf in early 2024 after nearly 12 years away due to injuries and personal issues, Kim's comeback journey has been lengthy and arduous. His showing in Riyadh suggests he might be regaining his rhythm.

Kim's 64 not only propelled him up the leaderboard but also showcased his rising confidence. He finished the round three shots behind leader Caleb Surratt and just two behind second-place Thomas Pieters from Belgium. Currently ranking 127th in The International Series with a mere 13.46 points, this week could dramatically alter his standings, with a substantial 324 points available for the winner, presenting him a genuine opportunity to ascend the rankings and keep his aspirations for a LIV Golf spot alive.

Following the round, Kim expressed his contentment with the progress of his game. He noted that he is starting to witness positive outcomes from his training efforts. He also acknowledged that he hadn't consistently managed to replicate his practice swings during tournaments but now feels that his form is translating well into competitive play. His increasing comfort on the course is reflected in his scorecard.

Known for his competitive spirit, Kim has faced pivotal moments in golf. Earlier in his career, he was regarded as one of the sport's most promising talents, winning three times on the PGA Tour and achieving remarkable results in major tournaments, including a third-place finish at the Masters in 2010 and a tie for fifth at The Open Championship in 2011. A key player for the U.S. teams that triumphed in the Ryder Cup in 2008 and the Presidents Cup in 2009, Kim was beloved for his dynamic playstyle, though injuries interrupted his ascent.

Now, at the age of 40, Kim seeks to rebuild his career and reclaim his esteemed position in the golfing realm. His performance at the Saudi Invitational indicates that he possesses the skill, drive, and experience to compete at an elite level. If he continues to play like he did on Friday, he may successfully climb the rankings and draw closer to earning his place back in LIV Golf.

As the tournament progresses into the weekend, all eyes are set on Kim to see if he can sustain his impressive form. With high stakes, a competitive field, and significant opportunities at play, this week could represent a pivotal moment in his comeback journey—a chance to affirm that despite all obstacles, he is primed to contend again at the top tier of golf.
