India’s stand-in captain K.L. Rahul has openly admitted that the team has struggled against spin bowling in recent home Test series. Following defeats to New Zealand and South Africa, Rahul acknowledged that Indian batters have not performed well against slow bowlers. He emphasized that the team recognizes this issue and is actively working on solutions to improve their performance in facing spin.
Rahul mentioned that the team is willing to learn from experienced cricket legends such as Sunil Gavaskar. Drawing insights from former greats can help Indian batters develop better techniques to handle spin. This approach shows the team’s commitment to improving their game and addressing weaknesses identified in recent matches.
During the second innings of the second Test in Guwahati, Rahul himself faced difficulties against spin. He was dismissed by off-spinner Simon Harmer after lunging forward and missing the ball, which led to the stumps being hit. Rahul explained that the dismissal was due to poor execution rather than attempting a wrong shot. He stated that in that moment, it was the last few overs of the day, and defending was the proper strategy, which he failed to execute effectively.
Rahul stressed that there is no regret in trying a different shot but rather in not executing the chosen shot properly. He believes that careful shot selection and execution are critical when facing skilled spinners, particularly in home conditions where pitches often favor slow bowlers. Improving this aspect is key for India’s success in future Test series.
Rahul expressed happiness in playing a match in M.S. Dhoni’s hometown, highlighting the connection players have with the former captain. Many team members have played under Dhoni and consider him a mentor and friend. Rahul said that if Dhoni attends the match, it will boost excitement for both the players and the fans, creating a lively atmosphere in the stadium.
Rahul’s statements underline India’s proactive approach to correcting weaknesses in batting against spin. By combining guidance from past cricket legends and focused practice, the team hopes to strengthen its performance in home conditions. This preparation is crucial as India looks forward to upcoming series against both top international teams and challenging spin-friendly pitches.
