The BCCI has indicated that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma must participate in domestic matches to maintain their fitness for international play. Despite stepping away from Tests and T20Is, both players are still committed to ODIs.
The upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy starting on 24 December presents a chance for them, falling between the ODI series against South Africa (3–9 December) and New Zealand starting 11 January.
Rohit has confirmed his likely availability for the Vijay Hazare Trophy to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), while Kohli's participation remains uncertain.
Both cricketers were last seen in ODIs during the Australian series, where Rohit scored a century in the final match and Kohli bounced back from two ducks to contribute 87 not out.
Insiders from the board emphasized the necessity for retired players to engage in domestic cricket to sharpen their skills. Given the duo's exit from two formats, domestic competitions play a critical role in maintaining their competitive edge.
Rohit has been training at Mumbai’s Sharad Pawar indoor academy and may also compete in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament starting 26 November. The board is optimistic that Kohli, currently residing in London, will take part in domestic cricket.
Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the selection committee, highlighted the importance of domestic competitions for all players. He noted that whenever players become available, they should engage in these tournaments to sustain their form and readiness between international duties.
Last season, Kohli and Rohit appeared in just one Ranji Trophy match each, with Kohli returning to Delhi after 12 years and Rohit representing Mumbai after a decade.
Rohit explained that his absence from domestic matches was primarily due to a packed international schedule from 2019 onwards. He acknowledged the importance of taking breaks to refresh as a player and noted that the board has managed this approach effectively.
Engaging in domestic cricket now facilitates their path to regain form and readiness for the forthcoming ODIs without overextending their commitments.
Agarkar reassured that neither Kohli nor Rohit is undergoing a trial period despite their limited international appearances. Their performances in domestic matches will serve to assess fitness levels, but their spots in future tournaments, including the 2027 ODI World Cup, remain secure.
With the selection committee concentrating on long-term strategies, domestic performances will be increasingly integrated to ensure consistency and preparedness ahead of significant series and tournaments.
As the ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand approaches, engaging in domestic events like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and possibly the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament will enable Kohli and Rohit to maintain their form.
This initiative ensures that these senior players stay competitive while effectively balancing rest and preparation, strengthening the team for the coming years in international cricket.
