Kohli and Rohit Propel India to 17-Run Victory Over South Africa

Kohli and Rohit Propel India to 17-Run Victory Over South Africa

Post by : Meena Hassan

A captivating cricket match in Ranchi saw Indian stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma shine brightly, orchestrating a vital 136-run partnership to propel India to a score of 349-8, securing a thrilling 17-run win over South Africa in the opening ODI.

Post-match, Indian captain KL Rahul remarked, "Watching them perform with such ease and confidence is always a pleasure. They certainly put the opposition under pressure, showcasing their immense talent."

Batting first for the 19th consecutive ODI after losing the toss, India faced an early setback with Yashasvi Jaiswal departing for 18. Kohli’s entry followed a reprieved Rohit, enabling the famed pair to establish a formidable partnership. Rohit reached his fifty in just 43 balls, unleashing consecutive sixes against spinner Prenelan Subrayen before being trapped lbw by Marco Jansen.

After faltering at 200-4, KL Rahul steadied with a composed 60 runs while Kohli unleashed a spectacular display with 135 runs off 120 balls, peppering the field with seven sixes and 11 fours. Additionally, Ravindra Jadeja contributed a brisk 32 runs off 20 balls, leading India to a substantial total.

South Africa’s innings began tentatively, losing early wickets, including Ryan Rickelton, Quinton de Kock, and Aiden Markram. However, the middle-order duo of Matthew Breetzke (72) and Marco Jansen (70) pulled South Africa back to 227-5. Yet, it was Kuldeep Yadav’s remarkable four-wicket spell that turned the tide, claiming crucial wickets of Breetzke and Jansen, reinvigorating India’s chances.

In the closing stages, Corbin Bosch displayed resilience with a spirited 67 off 51 balls, supported by Nandre Burger, but despite their efforts, South Africa fell short, concluding at 332 and gifting India a hard-fought 17-run triumph.

The two sides will clash once more on Wednesday in Raipur for the second ODI, gearing up for another riveting showdown.
