Kriti Sanon Discusses Gender Pay Disparity in Bollywood

Post by : Shakul

In a candid interview, Bollywood star Kriti Sanon has brought to the forefront the pressing issue of gender pay disparity in the Indian film industry. She highlighted that female actors frequently endure less favorable financial negotiations compared to their male counterparts, initiating vital discussions about equal remuneration and respect in the entertainment field.

Kriti pointed out that film producers often seek to lower budgets by negotiating the fees of female lead actors, while a significant amount of funding is typically reserved for male stars. The actress expressed her concerns about the ongoing struggles for fair compensation and emphasized that, despite some changes in the industry, deep-seated biases persist in various forms.

Additionally, she addressed the pervasive patriarchy within Bollywood culture, noting that gender inequality manifests in subtle ways on film sets. Kriti remarked that production teams often ensure that male actors are not required to wait, while female actors face pressure to adapt to changing schedules. These seemingly minor issues reflect broader challenges regarding respect and equality in the workplace.

Reflecting on her early career, Kriti shared that voicing her concerns or seeking equal treatment was often difficult. She recounts experiences where male co-stars, regardless of their experience level, received superior facilities and treatment. For Kriti, these instances weren’t about luxury but rather about achieving equal recognition and respect. While she acknowledged that some producers and directors have made strides toward progress, she noted that unconscious biases still linger in the industry.

Kriti also reminisced about the highs and lows in her acting career, pinpointing the success of her film “Mimi” as a pivotal moment. Released during the COVID-19 pandemic, the film streamed online rather than theatrical and garnered significant praise from both audiences and critics, challenging existing stereotypes about her acting skills.

Winning a National Award for Best Actress for “Mimi” marked a major career highlight for Kriti. Yet, she revealed the emotional toll of facing disappointments over roles she nearly landed, which often went to actors with industry connections. Such moments were heart-wrenching for her, as she believed in her capacity to tackle more demanding roles.

Kriti Sanon's insights contribute to an ongoing dialogue about equality and fairness in Bollywood, as discussions surrounding pay disparity, nepotism, and treatment in the workplace have gained traction in recent years. Many within the industry advocate for a more equitable environment where contributions and talent are acknowledged irrespective of gender.
