The release of Diljit Dosanjh’s latest song, Kufar, featuring former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, has sparked heated discussions online, particularly regarding certain dance moves that some social media users have deemed objectifying. A specific moment where a female dancer lifts her leg while Diljit stands nearby during the lyric “jannat ke darwaaze kudiye” became a focal point of criticism. In response, choreographers Shazia Samji and Piyush Bhagat have addressed the reasoning behind their choreography.
During a recent podcast, Shazia explained that the sensual nature of the lyrics informed the choreography, aiming to create a visually captivating performance. She noted that Diljit’s delivery naturally demanded such a striking visual element. Piyush echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the dance was designed to be bold and stylish, with a clear international flair. He highlighted that the teaser had set the stage for a “sexy dance,” which made the artistic intent clear from the start.
Both choreographers made it clear that the vision for Kufar was to reflect its sultry themes and resonate with Diljit’s diverse audience. They shared that everyone involved, including Diljit and Manushi, was well aware and agreeable to the creative vision. They recognized that varied public reactions are an integral part of any song’s journey. Notably, Shazia clarified that Manushi was not the dancer involved in the criticized move, despite facing online backlash herself.
Manushi, responding to criticism about her role in the video, defended artistic liberty, emphasizing that all forms of creativity deserve respect. She further stated that each performance contributes significantly to the broader artistic ecosystem.
In a light-hearted reaction, Diljit mentioned in a live stream that he was unaware of the backlash at the time of filming, describing his album AURA as inherently sensual, with its title influenced by the vibrant energy fans associate with his live performances. The album's aesthetic aligns with this seductive performance focus.
Despite the chatter, Kufar has garnered impressive views, surpassing 2.9 crore, and the ongoing discussion highlights larger themes surrounding artistic freedom, the changing landscape of pop culture, and the balancing act between sensuality and social responsibility in contemporary music videos.
