Serbia Greenlights Controversial $500M Kushner Project

Serbia Greenlights Controversial $500M Kushner Project

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Belgrade is poised for a significant change as the Serbian parliament has approved a luxury development spearheaded by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump. This $500 million initiative seeks to transform the site of the former Yugoslav Army headquarters into an upscale hotel and residential apartments, sparking widespread public demonstrations and legal scrutiny.

The site, which suffered substantial damage during NATO's bombing in 1999, symbolizes a complex legacy for many Serbians, embodying both historical reverence and resistance to foreign military actions. Although the building was designated as protected, the government revoked this status last year, allowing a 99-year lease to Kushner's Affinity Partners.

President Aleksandar Vucic, a proponent of strong US relations, has justified the project by asserting the necessity to move past the burdens of 1999 and foster closer ties with Washington. Despite backlash, the parliament, under Vucic's party, facilitated the development's advance.

Critics from the opposition, including Aleksandar Jovanovic, contend that the decision undermines constitutional integrity and risks replacing the historic site with luxuries such as “casinos and Jacuzzis.” Marinika Tepic, a centre-left MP, chastised the government for sidelining national heritage for international interests.

Concerns have also emerged from architectural professionals and anti-corruption organizations like Transparency Serbia, who warn about the potential obliteration of cultural heritage and a lack of transparency in state-led projects.

This development surfaces as Serbia navigates its intricate international relationships, particularly in light of the repercussions of US tariffs and restrictions on Russian businesses within the nation. While some advocate for the project's role in modernizing Belgrade, others fear it may erase vital aspects of Serbian history.
