Kuwait’s Big Plans for Green Energy and Protecting Nature

Kuwait’s Big Plans for Green Energy and Protecting Nature

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Kuwait is making the environment one of its most important priorities. The government wants to make protecting nature and the environment a key part of the country’s future plans. This is part of Kuwait’s goal to build a strong and safe environment for all people now and in the future.

Government’s Active Role in Environmental Plans

In the past two years, Kuwait’s government has worked very hard to create and follow plans that protect the environment. These efforts are guided by the instructions of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The Cabinet regularly discusses how to reduce carbon pollution and protect nature as a top agenda item.

Long-Term Roadmap for Low-Carbon Growth

Last month, Minister of Oil Tariq Al-Roumi and Environment Public Authority (EPA) officials shared a plan about Kuwait’s roadmap for low-carbon development. This plan helps Kuwait prepare for the effects of climate change by using smart technology and new ideas. The roadmap aims to help the economy grow without harming the environment.

Cooperation with China on Green Projects

Kuwait is working closely with China to improve recycling, use renewable energy, and build better sewage treatment plants. These partnerships help turn Kuwait’s big environmental ideas into real actions that support the Kuwait 2035 Vision. This vision focuses on keeping the environment safe for future generations.

Kuwait’s 2050 Low-Carbon Strategy

In November 2023, Kuwait launched a low-carbon plan for 2050 with the help of the United Nations Environment Programme. Kuwait is the second country in the Gulf region to present such a plan. The plan shows Kuwait’s promise to follow international climate agreements and reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2060.

Focus on Clean Energy and Waste Use

Kuwait is working to reduce the use of fossil fuels by using more gas and renewable energy like solar and wind power. The country also plans to use waste materials to support environmental goals, helping reduce pollution and protect natural resources.

First Report on Kuwait’s Environment

Last year, the EPA released the first detailed report about Kuwait’s environment. This report studies important issues like climate change, waste, water, wildlife, and marine life. The report was made with support from the UN and shows how different government departments are working together to improve the environment.

Strategic Projects for Environment Protection

The EPA has started four big projects to protect the environment and promote sustainable development in Kuwait. These projects focus on better waste management, stopping desertification (land turning into desert), and encouraging partnerships between government and private companies. The projects also help improve how well Kuwait manages its natural resources.

Planning for Green Urban Growth

Kuwait’s Fourth Structural Plan, or the 2040 Master Plan, supports building green and healthy cities. The plan encourages using environmentally friendly building designs to improve life for all residents and reduce pollution.

Laws to Protect the Environment

Kuwait has laws that protect nature by reducing air pollution and stopping harmful activities. The law also requires clear rules to separate pollution sources and punish anyone who damages the environment. These laws help keep Kuwait clean and safe for people and wildlife.

Commitment to Renewable Energy Goals

At a recent Sustainable Energy Conference, Minister Sabeeh Al-Mukhaizeen said Kuwait is working hard to produce 50% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2050. This includes large projects like the Shagaya Renewable Energy Park and smaller initiatives that require buildings to produce some of their own renewable energy.

Shagaya Renewable Energy Park Project

The Shagaya project is a partnership between public and private sectors. It will be built in two phases, producing 1100 MW in the first phase and 500 MW in the second. This project is a key part of Kuwait’s plan to increase clean energy use.

Greening Efforts by Agriculture Authority

Kuwait’s Public Authority of Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources is planting more trees and green areas, especially near the northern and southern borders. These campaigns help control sand dunes, fight desertification, and improve air quality. The authority also works to save water by planting suitable plants that can grow in dry conditions.

Importance of Public Parks in Kuwait

Public parks are very important for Kuwait’s green environment. The parks cover large areas and provide clean and healthy places for people to enjoy nature. Kuwait continues to invest in these parks to improve the quality of life for its citizens.

Kuwait’s International Environmental Commitments

Kuwait strongly supports international agreements related to the environment. The country works closely with global organizations and follows Gulf and regional environmental resolutions. This shows Kuwait’s commitment to joining global efforts for a better environment.

Praise from United Nations Representatives

Sami Dimassi, from the UN Environment Programme, praised Kuwait’s efforts to create strong environmental plans. He said Kuwait is making good progress in protecting nature and working towards sustainable development. Ghada Al-Taher, UN Secretary General’s representative in Kuwait, also praised Kuwait’s active role in fighting problems like desertification, water shortages, and loss of wildlife.

Kuwait’s Role in Global Climate Agreements

Kuwait joined the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1995 and the Kyoto Protocol in 2005. The country takes part in international climate meetings and follows agreements to reduce pollution and protect the planet.

Support for Regional Green Initiatives

At the Middle East Green Initiative Summit in 2022, Kuwait promised to fully support regional efforts to fight climate change. Kuwait sees this as a key moment for cooperation with other countries in the region to protect the environment and improve climate actions.
