Los Angeles has marked a significant moment as preparations ramp up for the inaugural Paralympic Games slated for 2028. With just 1,000 days left, organizers have introduced the first iteration of the competitive schedule. This version promises more sports, medal opportunities, and competition sessions than ever before.
The LA28 organizing committee shared that this edition will include 23 sports, 560 medal events, and 294 sessions. These arrangements were made in collaboration with international sports federations and Olympic Broadcasting Services. The aim is to maintain athlete well-being while ensuring accessible viewing for a global audience.
Ileana Rodriguez, the vice president for Paralympic strategy and relations, emphasized the commitment to a schedule centered on the athletes’ wellbeing. She noted the profound significance of holding the first Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, aiming for a memorable experience for both competitors and spectators alike. The plan is designed to facilitate seamless competitions and an engaging viewing atmosphere.
Mayor Karen Bass expressed her enthusiasm, announcing a record participation of women athletes, a pivotal move towards gender equality in sports. Los Angeles aspires to create an inviting and motivating atmosphere for athletes from all corners of the globe.
The opening ceremony for the 2028 Paralympics is set for August 15 at SoFi Stadium, a significant venue for major sports and entertainment. The games will conclude after twelve days of competition on August 27 at the storied Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which previously hosted events for the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, tightly linking the 2028 Paralympics to the city’s rich sporting heritage.
The inaugural Paralympic champions will be crowned on Day 1, with events awarding medals in:
Para athletics
Wheelchair fencing
Shooting Para sport
Para equestrian
Para track cycling
These events will prominently showcase the resilience and talent of the athletes right from the start.
Among the most exciting additions is the debut of Para climbing, making its first appearance at the Paralympics in 2028. Scheduled over four days starting on Day 9, this rapidly growing sport is anticipated to captivate both athletes and fans alike.
Additionally, two well-loved team sports—wheelchair rugby and sitting volleyball—will adopt extended formats for 2028, incorporating play-in rounds to allow more teams to participate and gain vital experience. Organizers believe this will enhance the competitiveness and enjoyment for fans.
While this preliminary schedule is now public, full event details and exact timings will follow in 2026, providing a comprehensive overview of each sport.
As the countdown to the opening ceremony progresses, excitement grows within Los Angeles. The aim for the 2028 Paralympic Games is to set new benchmarks for inclusivity, participation, and global engagement, promising a thrilling celebration of athletic excellence and human spirit.
