Marnus Labuschagne has shown strong support for Usman Khawaja ahead of the second Ashes Test against England. He made it clear that he will not move up the batting order, even if Australia decides to drop Khawaja, who struggled in the opening Test in Perth. Khawaja faced difficulties due to back spasms and scored only two runs in the match, failing to open in either innings. Despite these challenges, Labuschagne praised his teammate’s experience and skill.
Labuschagne said Khawaja does not need advice because of his vast experience and consistent performance. He highlighted that Khawaja has batted at various positions in the past, including number three, four, and opener, and has handled many challenging situations with skill. Labuschagne added that Khawaja’s First-Class cricket performances this year have been excellent and he continues to be an important player for Australia.
The discussion about Australia’s opening partnership has been ongoing since David Warner retired from Test cricket. For 22 months, the team has experimented with different combinations, trying to find the best player to bat alongside Khawaja. Labuschagne, along with Steve Smith, has occasionally filled in at the opening position, but he confirmed that such experiments are no longer needed. He stated that he and Smith will remain in their usual batting positions rather than opening the innings.
Labuschagne, who usually bats at number three, had been dropped from the Test side during the West Indies tour in June and July due to poor form. However, he made a strong comeback by scoring consecutive centuries in domestic cricket, proving his ability and readiness for international matches. In the Perth Test, he scored nine runs in the first innings and then secured his 24th Test half-century while batting with Travis Head. Their partnership helped Australia win the match by eight wickets.
Labuschagne described his partnership with Travis Head in Perth as exciting and enjoyable, allowing him to play free-flowing cricket. The duo built a strong partnership that guided Australia to victory, giving the team confidence ahead of the next Test. Labuschagne said that this experience was personally rewarding and a reminder of the importance of teamwork and adaptability in crucial match situations.
As Australia prepares for the second Ashes Test, Labuschagne’s support for Khawaja sends a clear message about trust and stability in the batting lineup. The team is focused on maintaining confidence in key players, while ensuring that the batting order remains balanced and effective. Fans can expect Labuschagne to continue at number three, with Khawaja opening, aiming for strong performances and a positive result in Brisbane’s Gabba stadium.
