Telugu actress and producer Lakshmi Manchu opened up about a distressing experience she endured at the age of 15, recalling an incident of inappropriate touching during her school days. She described the moment as profoundly shameful, leaving an enduring impression on her youthful psyche.
In an honest discussion, Lakshmi mentioned her sheltered upbringing, often accompanied by a driver, bodyguard, and her mother for safety. However, one day she had to navigate public transport alone to retrieve her exam hall tickets, which led to the traumatic encounter.
“What is this awful sensation? I was just 15 at the time. I wonder if they recognized I was a child. I didn’t retaliate but confided in my friends, who revealed similar experiences. This is unfortunately a widespread issue, and I was not uniquely targeted,” Lakshmi reflected.
She also noted the societal expectation that those from affluent families remain silent about such experiences. “People often disregard your voice thinking you’ll tolerate misfortunes. When something is stolen, silence is preferable; it’s how I’ve learned to act—so as not to draw unwanted attention,” she expressed.
Lakshmi shared how the MeToo movement struck a deep emotional chord within her. “I wept when I saw the Women’s Commission’s pamphlets—every story resonated with my own experiences,” she admitted.
Having begun her acting journey in the American series Las Vegas, Lakshmi has also played roles in popular shows like Desperate Housewives. She has been featured in notable commercials for brands such as Toyota and Chevrolet.
As the daughter of Telugu film icon Mohan Babu, Lakshmi has garnered recognition over the years, winning multiple Filmfare and Nandi Awards. Recently, she appeared on the reality show The Traitors, amplifying her presence in the entertainment realm.
Through her powerful revelations, Lakshmi Manchu underscores the widespread nature of harassment, showing how it impacts individuals across various societal strata and urging the importance of speaking out against such abuse.
