Lakshya Sen Advances; Malvika Bansod Exits at Malaysia Open 2026

Post by : Meena Hassan

Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen had a promising start to the season at the Malaysia Open Super 750 tournament, progressing to the second round after a competitive match against Singapore’s Jia Heng Jason Teh.

The 24-year-old from Almora, who had a remarkable previous season with an Australian Open title and a finals appearance at the Hong Kong Open, showcased his skills over 70 intense minutes to slip past world No. 21 Teh. Sen began strong, winning the first game 21-16, dropped the second 15-21, but rallied back to clinch the match with a final score of 21-14.

With this victory, the World No. 13 Sen will compete against either sixth seed Christo Popov from France or Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu in the upcoming round.

Meanwhile, in the women’s singles, India’s Malvika Bansod faced a challenging return from a six-month injury hiatus. Going up against Thailand’s former world champion and seventh seed, Ratchanok Intanon, Bansod struggled, ultimately falling 11-21, 11-21 in the first round.

Additionally, India’s Ayush Shetty, who secured the US Open Super 300 title last year, is preparing for a match against Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia, the bronze medallist from the Paris Olympics, in another anticipated clash.

In the men’s doubles, the experienced duo of M R Arjun and 22-year-old Hariharan Amsakarunan will battle against Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Kyohei Yamashita, seeking a strong opening in the doubles competition.

As top Indian players kick off the Malaysia Open in strong form, fans are eager for continued exciting performances throughout the tournament.
