Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, has welcomed back the talented Lamine Yamal to the national team just in time for pivotal World Cup qualifying matches. The young forward, representing Barcelona, had been out due to a groin injury but has successfully returned to fitness ahead of upcoming contests against Georgia and Turkey.
At only 18, Yamal missed the last two qualifying fixtures but has recently participated in club games. Despite Barcelona experiencing a tough 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in El Clasico, Yamal remains highly discussed in Spanish football circles, especially after his heated encounter with Madrid players post-match.
On Friday, de la Fuente affirmed his enthusiasm for Yamal, stating, "He’s back in shape, and we are thrilled to have him with us," highlighting the significance of his recovery for Spain’s ambitions. Addressing the media frenzy around the teenager, he advised caution and support.
“The press is eager for a story, which adds pressure, but he needs to focus,” de la Fuente emphasized. "At just 18, it’s crucial we nurture his growth as both a person and a player. His club, alongside our national team, must support him during this phase.”
Yamal’s comeback is particularly itimer for Spain, currently leading Group E in the European World Cup qualifiers. As they edge closer to securing automatic qualification, his addition fortifies their attacking setup. The match against Georgia will take place in Tbilisi on November 15, followed by a home game in Seville against Turkey on November 18.
Alongside Yamal, PSG's Fabian Ruiz is also cleared to return following a leg injury he incurred during a Champions League game against Barcelona in early October.
However, Spain will be missing key players such as Barcelona’s Pedri and Manchester City’s Rodri, both sidelined by injuries. Other absences include Dani Carvajal from Real Madrid, Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao, and Atletico Madrid’s Robin Le Normand, all of whom face injury issues.
With crucial qualifiers approaching, the revival of emerging talents like Yamal brings excitement for Spain's supporters. de la Fuente’s strategy of balancing the development of young players with the pressures of international competition will play a significant role in Spain’s pursuit of World Cup qualification.
