Lando Norris expressed his desire for a painting that encapsulates every emotion and image from the final laps leading to his historic Formula One world championship victory. The 26-year-old McLaren driver hopes to display this artwork on his wall as a reminder of what he describes as an almost "out-of-body" experience while racing toward the finish line at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit last Sunday.
The day after achieving the most significant victory of his career, Norris sat down with journalists to share how his thoughts turned to family, childhood reminiscences, and the years of dedication that brought him to this moment. He mentioned that the last two laps, in which he needed only a third-place finish to clinch the championship, remain the “best memory” of his life.
Norris reflected on how time seemed to slow as he drew closer to the finish, vividly picturing the perspective from his helmet—the visor, the track's bumps, and the sea of McLaren's iconic papaya colours surrounding him. This, he noted, is the moment he wishes to be captured in a painting.
“I genuinely want someone to recreate that view from my eyes,” he shared. “Coming around the last corner, seeing the chequered flag, and lifting both my gloves to my face because I was in tears... I want to encapsulate that moment. That was truly the moment for me.”
A Shared Experience Among Champions
Norris's narrative resonated with echoes of McLaren icon Ayrton Senna, who once described a similar out-of-body experience during a legendary lap in Monaco back in 1988. While Norris insisted he does not draw comparisons with Senna, he acknowledged that the feelings were similarly profound.
Three laps from the conclusion, Norris pondered how he would react to becoming a world champion, fearing he might feel indifferent. Instead, he was overwhelmed by memories—childhood karting, gaming sessions with his father Adam, and the image of his mother Cisca from the garage.
“It felt cinematic,” Norris remarked. “Flashbacks and highlights, almost akin to the final moments of life, but for me, it was merely the last minutes before ascending to champion status. I felt as though I was observing myself from above, as if I had a bird's-eye view.”
Embracing His Unique Journey
Prior to the race weekend, Norris confessed he had viewed videos of how other champions, such as Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, celebrated their titles. Yet, he ultimately decided not to imitate anyone else, wishing instead to embrace the experience organically.
“I’m grateful I didn’t mimic anyone,” he admitted. “Everything unfolded spontaneously, which made that moment even more remarkable.”
Having secured his first Formula One world championship and experienced one of the most emotional finishes in recent history, Norris is now eager to immortalize the memory forever—through a painting that captures the precise moment he achieved his dream.
