Larry Summers, former US Treasury Secretary and Harvard professor, has taken an unexpected leave from his teaching duties following the emergence of emails that reveal his ongoing friendly correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. This decision is influenced by increasing public scrutiny and the revival of an investigation regarding his links to Epstein.
Summers, who previously held the role of Harvard’s president, had already curbed public engagements in light of the email disclosures. He has also ended his connection with OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT. According to Harvard, Summers will withdraw from his undergraduate economics classes and step down from his position as director at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School.
“Mr. Summers believes it’s in the best interest of the Center to take leave while Harvard conducts its review,” stated his spokesperson, Steven Goldberg. His co-teachers will continue with classes, and he will not teach next semester.
The released emails indicate that Summers remained in touch with Epstein well beyond Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor. Some communications imply that Epstein provided personal advice to Summers regarding romantic matters, to which Summers seemingly responded.
Elisa New, Summers’ wife, also interacted with Epstein. In a 2015 email, she expressed gratitude for funds he secured for a poetry project she leads, stating that the contribution significantly impacted her work.
Although Summers assured that he would maintain his teaching position, student reactions to his presence in class have surfaced. On Tuesday, he addressed his undergraduate class on “The Political Economy of Globalization,” admitting regret for his exchanges with Epstein. A video of his comments has circulated among students, yet no public reactions have emerged.
This controversy has prompted several organizations to sever ties with Summers, including the Center for American Progress, the Center for Global Development, Yale's Budget Lab, Bloomberg TV, and the New York Times. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized Summers on social media, stating he “cozied up to the rich and powerful — including a convicted sex offender.”
Summers served as the US Treasury Secretary from 1999 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton and led Harvard from 2001 to 2006. After the email disclosures, Summers acknowledged last week that his relationship with Epstein was a “significant error in judgment,” expressing “deep regrets” over the situation.
