Yann LeCun, an influential figure in contemporary artificial intelligence, has disclosed his exit from Meta after an impactful 12-year tenure. The 65-year-old luminary, instrumental in advancing Facebook's AI initiatives, is setting out to establish his independent startup targeted at fostering “the next significant breakthrough in AI.”
LeCun’s departure signals a notable transition for Meta, where he has spent five years as the chief architect of Facebook AI Research (FAIR) and an additional seven years as the leading AI scientist. Over his span with the company, he led initiatives that placed Meta at the cutting edge of essential AI explorations.
In a comprehensive message on Facebook and LinkedIn, LeCun outlined that his new startup would build on the Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI) research project, a long-term effort he has spearheaded in conjunction with FAIR, NYU, and global partners. His aspirations are lofty: to create AI systems capable of comprehending the physical environment, constructing lasting memories, reasoning through intricate situations, and executing multi-step strategies.
Although he is moving on from Meta, LeCun maintains a connection with the organization. Meta will function as a strategic ally for his new venture, which will allow insights from his laboratory to enrich the firm's ongoing AI projects. This partnership enables LeCun to pursue foundational research, while ensuring Meta can benefit from advancements developed outside its immediate commercial objectives.
LeCun’s exit comes amid significant reconfigurations at Meta. Earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a $14.5 billion investment in Scale AI and appointed CEO Alexandr Wang as the new chief AI officer at Meta. This shake-up, along with the lukewarm reception of Meta's Llama 4 model, indicates a turn towards faster commercialization and application-focused AI development—a strategy different from LeCun's more research-oriented approach.
Liberated from corporate limitations, LeCun is set to steer his startup under his own direction, with the intent to transform the relationship between AI and the physical as well as cognitive realms. While his departure is a notable loss for Meta, the continuing collaboration offers the company access to the insights of one of the most pivotal figures in today’s AI landscape.
