Lee Man-hee of Shincheonji Church Arrested in South Korea

Post by : Shakul

A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for 95-year-old Lee Man-hee, the founder of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, amid claims that he orchestrated political engagement among church followers prior to national elections. Prosecutors allege the church unlawfully motivated members to support the conservative People Power Party (PPP) between 2021 and 2024.

The probe centers on alleged breaches of South Korea's Political Parties Act, which forbids religious groups from engaging in political activities.

Arrest Authorized Over Evidence Tampering Risks

Following arguments from prosecutors about the possible destruction of evidence, the Seoul Central District Court sanctioned Lee's arrest. During the warrant hearing, Lee did not respond to inquiries from reporters regarding the accusations.

Investigators suspect Lee was pivotal in mobilizing over 50,000 Shincheonji followers to back political candidates during the 2022 presidential polls and the 2024 parliamentary nomination process.

Details of the Allegations Against Shincheonji

Authorities claim that Lee directed church members to enroll in a political party and take part in candidate selection. This case exemplifies a potential illegal alliance between a religious body and political entities.

Lee has refuted any claims of wrongdoing, with the probe still active.

Previous Scrutiny of Shincheonji

The church gained international attention during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when it was linked to a significant number of early coronavirus cases. Mainstream Christian groups have often criticized Shincheonji’s teachings and influence.

Lee was acquitted in 2021 for violating public health laws related to the pandemic.

Potential Influence on South Korean Politics

Experts suggest this case may draw greater public scrutiny on the relationship between religious groups and political parties. If allegations are substantiated, it could lead to tighter regulation of political activities by religious organizations and strengthen existing electoral regulations.

The date for the next court session has not yet been disclosed.

Ongoing Investigations

South Korean prosecutors are actively examining evidence pertaining to the alleged political mobilization scheme, with further witnesses and church officials expected to be interrogated as they attempt to uncover the full magnitude of the operation.

The outcome of this case could have significant legal and political ramifications for upcoming elections in South Korea.
