Ranveer Singh’s eagerly awaited spy film Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar and set for release on December 5, 2025, is currently embroiled in a legal controversy. The parents of the late Major Mohit Sharma, an Ashoka Chakra (posthumously) and Sena Medal recipient, allege that the film portrays their son’s life without consent.
The situation gained traction following the film’s trailer release, which depicts the lead character engaged in covert operations reminiscent of Major Sharma's service in the Indian Army’s 1 Para (Special Forces). He was killed in action in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, on March 21, 2009, and is honored for his bravery.
Despite the filmmaker’s claims that the story is entirely fictional, Major Sharma’s parents have approached the Delhi High Court, asserting that their son’s narrative is being exploited as a “commercial commodity.” Their petition also raises concerns regarding privacy and national security, cautioning that the depiction of Special Forces activities could expose sensitive data.
The notice has involved several parties, including the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Jio Studios, producer Jyoti Deshpande, and director Aditya Dhar, as they seek a halt on the film’s release.
In response, the filmmakers' legal team refuted any similarities between the film’s content and Major Sharma’s life, asserting that it is a fictional production. The CBFC confirmed that they have categorized the film as a work of fiction.
While the Delhi High Court has not impeded the film’s release, it has instructed the CBFC to take the family’s concerns into account and consider consulting the Indian Army if necessary prior to final certification.
Featuring a star-studded cast, including Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Sara Arjun, audiences now look forward to whether the film will hit theaters as planned or face delays.
