LIV Golf is poised for a significant update beginning 2026. Reports from Flushing It on X reveal that all new signings will be obliged to participate in at least two Asian Tour International Series events each year. This initiative aligns with LIV's ongoing strategy to enhance its collaboration with the Asian Tour and broaden its global influence.
Although this regulation appears novel, it formalizes a trend observed over the past few years. Iconic players like Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Patrick Reed have already engaged in Asian Tour International Series tournaments since 2022. Until now, such involvement was voluntary; however, it will become a mandatory component of contracts for new LIV Golf players starting next year.
From 2026 onwards, each new player will be required to participate in a total of 16 tournaments each season—14 events across the LIV Golf schedule and 2 from the Asian Tour International Series. This requirement assures the competitive nature of the LIV tour while simultaneously elevating the Asian Tour's global visibility.
This change is part of the Saudi-backed league's ambition to grow its brand internationally. LIV Golf’s tagline, “Golf but louder,” encapsulates its effort to make the sport more appealing and interconnected globally. By forming a partnership with the Asian Tour, LIV aims to engage larger audiences in Asia and facilitate more opportunities for golfers from developing markets.
Initially, the Asian Tour International Series offered prize pools between $1.5 million and $2 million per event. It was established to cultivate golf in Asia by arranging roughly 10 major tournaments each year. Presently, it serves as a core aspect of LIV’s strategy to extend beyond its established markets in Europe and North America. This partnership is expected to unlock pathways for emerging talent while granting LIV’s top players more opportunities for ranking.
A key factor driving this new policy may be the impending expiration of LIV Golf’s indemnity policy in 2025, which protects players from fines from the DP World Tour for LIV participation. Once concluded, players might increasingly focus on the Asian Tour, where strong ties exist. Additionally, as LIV Golf events do not currently award Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, the International Series presents an essential avenue for players to maintain or enhance their global standings.
LIV’s team-building approach is also adapting, now utilizing sophisticated, data-driven scouting influenced by sports betting analytics. This enables teams to discover players whose statistics fit the LIV format. Presently, six spots on rosters remain available for the 2026 season, with many players expected to renew contracts this year under revised financial conditions.
Reports indicate that the era of substantial signing bonuses may be concluding. The Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF), fundamental to LIV Golf's financing, is reportedly scaling back on extravagant signing incentives. Deals like Jon Rahm's $300 million signing in 2024 made headlines, alongside those of DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, and Sergio Garcia. However, the current focus appears to be shifting from financial rewards to competitive integrity and global outreach.
The forthcoming International Series event will take place in the Philippines, featuring renowned players like Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed. Meanwhile, LIV Golf's fifth season is scheduled to commence from February 5–7, 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Jon Rahm anticipated to vie for his third consecutive individual championship after a quieter season.
Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia is reportedly finalizing his DP World Tour membership and has shown interest in returning for the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland, reviving talks on the potential reintegration of LIV golfers into traditional competitions like the Ryder Cup.
The new policy by LIV Golf exemplifies an effort to harmonize competitiveness, commercial progression, and international presence. By mandating participation in Asian Tour events, LIV not only aids the development of golf in Asia but also fortifies its global standing. Though player schedules and routines may adjust, this could assist in promoting golf beyond established boundaries.
