Decades ago, unlike today's podcasts, audiences were enthralled by chilling radio dramas. Among such works, a seldom-heard show by Tennessee Williams has recently emerged, illuminating the mind of one of America’s legendary playwrights during his college days.
Entitled “The Strangers,” this gothic drama was crafted by Williams, then known as Tom, during his studies at the University of Iowa in the late 1930s. Now featured in The Strand Magazine, the play unveils his early intrigue with themes of fear, seclusion, and the indistinct boundary between reality and fantasy. The publication has a notable record of rediscovering lesser-known works by celebrated authors like Hemingway and Faulkner.
With its setting in a stately New England house overlooking the ocean, “The Strangers” plunges listeners into an atmosphere of tempestuous nights, candle flicker, and indistinct sounds. The plot revolves around Mr. and Mrs. Brighton, who perceive ghostly entities hovering just beyond human awareness. Initial lines showcase Williams’ characteristic focus on human vulnerability: “We members of the human species are equipped with only five senses. Or six at the very most… what we know of them is very, very slight.”
Williams’ attraction to horror is shaped not only by popular radio phenomena of the 1930s but also by personal experiences. During this era, he faced the mental health challenges of his sister Rose, a struggle that would later influence the sensitive characters in works like The Glass Menagerie.
Originally intended as a creative exercise, these radio dramas allowed Williams to hone his narrative skills, dialogue, and dramatic tension, paving the way for the renowned works that would follow. “The Strangers” provides an exceptional look into the early stages of a writer whose explorations of fear and human fragility endure through the years.
