Singer Lucky Ali has candidly addressed his recent public conflict with respected lyricist Javed Akhtar, expressing regret over his impolite remarks. He conveyed to Navbharat Times that, while he refrained from using offensive language, his reaction was nonetheless brusque, and he feels remorseful, particularly given Akhtar's seniority.
“I have also erred at times. We often react impulsively,” Lucky stated. “Mujhse bhi shayad ek bar ek buzurg ke prati badttameezee huyi, jiska mujhe afsos hai. Mauka mile toh maafi zaroor mangunga (I have perhaps also been inconsiderate to an elder, which I regret. If the opportunity arises, I will certainly apologise).”
The rift between the two artists intensified last month when Lucky Ali criticized Javed Akhtar over an old video where the lyricist allegedly made controverted statements regarding Hindu-Muslim relations. Lucky reacted fiercely to a comment accusing Akhtar of suggesting Hindus should not emulate Muslims and instead strive to change them.
In his backlash, Lucky Ali commented, “Don’t become like Javed Akhtar, never original and ugly as f**k.” However, he later clarified, “What I meant was that arrogance is unattractive… I mistakenly conveyed my thoughts… even monsters have feelings, and I apologize if I offended anyone’s feelings.”
Describing his emotional response, Lucky explained, “When someone consistently disparages your community or religion, it stings, particularly when that person is prominent and accountable. That’s where I erred. I didn’t use foul language, but the situation escalated. If anyone feels hurt, I apologize, but everyone shares responsibility.”
Reacting calmly, Javed Akhtar commented to India Today, “I must take Lucky Ali’s viewpoint with a grain of salt. It’s great that he has the right to express his thoughts, even if I disagree with him.”
In spite of the heated exchange, both artists seem inclined to move past this incident, with Lucky Ali acknowledging his fault and hoping for a chance to apologize.
This incident has underscored the sensitivity surrounding conversations on religion and community in India, particularly in the context of public figures. It illustrates how social media interactions can affect personal reputations and highlights the need for accountability in public dialogues.
