Lucy Liu Takes Center Stage in First Dramatic Role with Rosemead

Celebrated American actress Lucy Liu, known for her work in Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill, and Elementary, is making her debut in a significant dramatic role with Rosemead. After nearly three decades in the film industry, she acknowledges the scarcity of substantial dramatic roles she has encountered.

Expressing her astonishment, Liu stated, “It’s hard to believe that after over 30 years, I finally get a lead in a drama. This is surreal.”

She also confronted the stereotypes and biases that shaped her career path, particularly critiquing perceptions tied to her portrayal of the “Dragon Lady” in Kill Bill (2003) and questioning why similar standards aren't applied to her peers.

Liu reflected on how appearance-based stereotypes have restricted her roles, saying, “I can’t change my ethnicity to fit in more, but if I could, it might have opened many more doors for me.”

Despite these setbacks, her enthusiasm for storytelling is undeterred. “Even with the flaws in the industry, my belief in the magic of filmmaking hasn't wavered,” she remarked, sharing how her early successes in Hollywood continue to inspire her.

In Rosemead, Liu plays Irene, a Chinese immigrant grappling with her son’s mental health. The film, inspired by a 2017 article, sees her not only as the lead actor but also making her debut as a producer. It premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 6 and is set for U.S. release on December 5.
