Madhuri Dixit Says Actors Should Choose Their Work Hours

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Bollywood veteran Madhuri Dixit shared her opinion on the ongoing debate about introducing 8-hour work shifts for actors. She believes that each actor should have the freedom to decide how they want to balance work and personal life. The discussion gained attention after Deepika Padukone reportedly requested 8-hour work shifts, leading to her exit from the upcoming film 'Spirit', directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and starring Prabhas.

Madhuri, who has worked in Bollywood for decades, reflected on her experience managing long shooting schedules while raising a family. She said that defining one’s work hours should be a personal decision. She recalled her work on the film 'Mrs Deshpande', where she often worked 12-hour shifts or more. Madhuri explained that she is a workaholic and enjoys long hours, but she respects those who choose a different schedule. She stated, “If a woman has that power and can say, ‘okay, I want to work these many hours,’ then that’s her prerogative, and that’s her life.”

Madhuri emphasized that actors should not be pressured to follow a standard work schedule. Her views highlight the importance of flexibility in the film industry. She added that work hours should depend on personal preference and mutual agreement between actors and producers. This perspective has sparked discussions among industry professionals about whether structured work hours are necessary or if personal choice should prevail.

Earlier, Rani Mukerji also spoke about flexible work hours in Bollywood. She explained that schedules have traditionally been based on mutual understanding between actors and producers. Rani said, “These things are up for conversation today because maybe people are discussing it outside. But this has been the norm with all professions. If the producer’s okay with it, you go ahead with the film. If the producer isn’t okay with it, you don’t make the film. Nobody is forcing anything on anybody.” Madhuri’s statement aligns with Rani’s view, supporting actors’ freedom to decide how they manage their work-life balance.

Madhuri Dixit remains one of Bollywood’s most respected actresses. She gained fame with hit films like 'Dil', 'Beta', 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!', and 'Dil To Pagal Hai'. She also earned praise for performances in movies such as 'Prem Pratigyaa', 'Parinda', 'Mrityudand', 'Pukar', and 'Lajja'. Her role as Chandramukhi in 'Devdas' won her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Even today, Madhuri continues to be active in films and web series. She appeared in 'Dedh Ishqiya' and the Netflix series 'The Fame Game', as well as in movies like 'Total Dhamaal' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3'. Her support for flexible work hours reflects her understanding of both the industry and the personal needs of actors. By advocating for freedom and choice, Madhuri contributes to an ongoing conversation about improving work conditions and work-life balance in Bollywood.
