Moscow Airports Temporarily Closed Due to Drone Attacks

Post by : Bianca Haleem

On Sunday, three of Moscow’s primary airports experienced a temporary closure after a large-scale drone assault from Ukraine targeted the Russian capital, resulting in major flight delays and heightened security measures.

As reported by Russian officials, air traffic at Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports came to a standstill for approximately one hour during the afternoon hours. This closure occurred between 1300 GMT and 1400 GMT and caused delays for numerous domestic and international flights, notably affecting Vnukovo, Moscow’s second-busiest hub.

The Russian aviation authority indicated that this precautionary measure was taken to safeguard passengers while air defense systems were activated in the vicinity of the capital. Operations gradually resumed as the situation was managed.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that Russian air defenses successfully intercepted and neutralized at least 27 drones en route to the city. Thankfully, no significant damage was reported in Moscow, but this incident underscores the expanding capacity of drone warfare within Russian borders.

Ukraine has not yet commented on these strikes. Since the onset of the conflict in 2022, Kyiv has depended increasingly on drone operations while also enduring persistent aerial attacks on its cities from Russian military forces.

In a separate incident, the governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, located on the Ukrainian border, reported a deadly drone strike that struck a car with a family, resulting in one fatality and two injuries, including a four-year-old child.

These recent events highlight the ongoing impact of the nearly four-year-long conflict on civilian lives and essential infrastructure on both sides, as air travel and border areas find themselves increasingly caught in the conflict's crossfire.
