7 Dead After Garbage Mountain Collapses at Jakarta Landfill

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Indonesian authorities have ended rescue operations after a landfill collapse near Jakarta killed seven people. Officials confirmed on Tuesday that all individuals who were at the site during the incident have now been accounted for.

The accident happened on Sunday at the Bantargebang landfill, the largest waste disposal site in Indonesia. A massive mound of garbage collapsed following heavy rainfall, trapping several people who were working or running small businesses in the area.

Rescue teams continued search efforts for two days at the landfill, located on the outskirts of Jakarta. The final victim was recovered before the operation was officially called off, according to Desiana Kartika Bahari, head of the local rescue agency.

Earlier reports on Monday stated that four people had died, four had survived and five were still missing. However, authorities later confirmed that two of the people initially reported missing were safe and had already returned home.

The victims included truck drivers and food stall owners who were present at the landfill site at the time of the collapse.

More than 200 rescue workers participated in the operation. Teams used heavy excavators to remove piles of waste while thermal drones were deployed to help locate trapped victims under the debris.

The Bantargebang landfill covers an area of about 110 hectares and receives between 6,500 and 7,000 tonnes of waste every day, making it one of the busiest waste disposal facilities in the country.

Authorities are expected to review safety measures at the landfill following the deadly incident.
