In a significant development for Eurovision 2026, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia have declared a boycott after the decision to allow Israel to take part.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that, following lengthy discussions held in Geneva, the contest will continue as planned. Around 50 countries' broadcasters participated in the meeting, which involved debates on allegations of biased voting and the situation in Gaza.
RTVE of Spain, one of the “Big Five” broadcasters, expressed that this decision heightened its “distrust of the festival’s organization,” while similarly, RTÉ from Ireland labeled participation as “unconscionable,” considering the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Slovenia and the Netherlands shared similar sentiments, emphasizing ethical standards and collective values.
The issue arose partly due to claims that Israeli participant Yuval Raphael had benefited from irregular voting patterns in 2025. The EBU has since put in place new measures to mitigate political influence over voting, which were a condition for confirming Israel’s participation in 2026.
Amid the boycotts, several nations praised the EBU’s initiatives. Nordic countries, including Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland, applauded the reforms aimed at ensuring fairness in the contest. Germany also supported the decision, highlighting the significance of cultural diversity and solidarity.
This divide underscores the increasing tensions within the Eurovision community as it strives to uphold its principle of neutrality while addressing geopolitical challenges. With the 70th edition on the horizon, the EBU is faced with the daunting task of fostering unity while honoring broadcaster decisions and global sensitivities.
