US Government Shutdown Triggers Major Flight Reductions

US Government Shutdown Triggers Major Flight Reductions

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In the United States, air travelers are experiencing significant disruptions as airlines reduce flight schedules due to the extended government shutdown. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated a 4% flight reduction at 40 major airports, which could increase to 10% by November 14 if the situation persists.

Many air traffic controllers and security personnel, who are working without compensation, have resulted in numerous flight delays nationwide. By the evening hours, over 5,300 flights were recorded as delayed; notably, Reagan Washington National Airport experienced average waits of four hours with 17% of its flights canceled.

The largest U.S. carriers—American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, and United—are feeling the brunt of these cuts. Specifically, American Airlines grounded 220 flights impacting approximately 12,000 passengers, while United Airlines canceled 184 flights. Although airlines are working to rebook passengers promptly, the disruptions may escalate if the shutdown continues.

Major hubs like Atlanta, San Francisco, Houston, Phoenix, Washington, DC, and Newark have already felt the impact of reduced services. FAA Administrator Sean Duffy has cautioned that further absenteeism among air traffic controllers could necessitate cutting up to 20% of flights, raising fears regarding travel safety and system efficiency.

The shutdown, now spanning 38 days, has left approximately 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 security staff working without pay, which has led to increased absenteeism and pressures on the aviation system. Airport boards are cluttered with cancellations and delays, leaving travelers uncertain about their plans for upcoming holidays.

While there may be fewer cuts over the weekend due to reduced flight volumes, experts insist that ongoing labor shortages and inaction from the government could render typical travel into a logistical headache.
