In a significant advancement for sports technology, Malaysia has introduced the world's first artificial intelligence-driven instant review system for badminton. This innovative system has gained official approval from the Badminton World Federation (BWF), marking a breakthrough in the sport.
Developed by Revealtek Sdn Bhd, a company specializing in digital solutions for badminton, this system made its debut at the Petronas National Under 18 Badminton Championship in Selangor, where it was successfully used during live tournament action.
The system allows athletes to contest line calls during gameplay. Utilizing advanced AI-enabled cameras, it evaluates the shuttlecock's trajectory and quickly determines if the shuttle lands in or out of play. Decisions are relayed within seconds on screens visible to players, officials, and spectators alike.
This technology is an integral part of the Reveal Digital Badminton Suite, encompassing various features such as the instant review system, a digital scoring mechanism for referees, and live streaming with real-time scoring updates for viewers.
A notable advantage of this system is its user-friendliness and adaptability. Unlike traditional setups used in international competitions that require extensive infrastructure and high costs, this system can be deployed swiftly and operates seamlessly. It can be installed in less than an hour and is suitable for various court types.
The leadership at Revealtek emphasized that the aim of this innovation is to democratize high-level officiating technology for wider tournament access. Previously, such systems were confined to elite competitions, with costs exceeding one hundred thousand US dollars for a single event.
This new system enhances match decision-making while maintaining gameplay flow. Quick decisions minimize disputes between athletes and officials, and recorded footage serves as a valuable tool for performance review and coaching.
Initial reactions from players, coaches, and officials have been overwhelmingly positive. Many noted that the system delivers clearer rulings and elevates the overall experience, even at junior competition levels.
With this advancement, Malaysia is positioning itself as a leader in badminton technology, with plans to extend this system’s availability to international tournaments, national associations, private clubs, and recreational events, thus promoting advanced sports technology on a broader scale.
