Malaysia Imposes Restrictions on Grok AI for Inappropriate Image Use

Post by : Meena Hassan

Malaysia has enacted a temporary ban on Grok, the AI chatbot, following incidents of its misuse to create sexualized and non-consensual images. This decision aligns with a similar prohibition in Indonesia, highlighting a rising global apprehension regarding the risks associated with generative AI tools.

Developed by xAI, founded by Elon Musk, Grok recently restricted its image editing capabilities to paying users after instances allowed for the creation of sexually explicit content without consent.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) indicated that the repeated misuse of Grok to produce “obscene, sexually explicit, and indecent images, including materials involving women and minors,” necessitated this restriction. The commission pointed out that previous attempts to address the issue, based on user reporting, did not successfully curb the generation of harmful content.

The MCMC stressed that the ban would remain until substantial technical safeguards and moderation practices are put in place, emphasizing the need for platforms to prevent misuse under Malaysia’s stringent online content regulations, which prohibit obscene and pornographic material.

While xAI has not provided a comprehensive response, the company has expressed disagreement with certain media narratives. Malaysian officials also indicated their willingness to engage in discussions with xAI to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

In response to concerns over harmful online content, Malaysia has heightened scrutiny of digital platforms and is contemplating restrictions on social media use for users under the age of 16.
