Drone Attacks Force UAE Airports to Divert Flights

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The UAE has redirected flights from Dubai International Airport after a drone attack caused a fire near the airport. Authorities say the fire, which affected a fuel tank nearby, was contained quickly and no injuries were reported.

Flights were temporarily moved to Al Maktoum International Airport, and the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority suspended operations as a safety measure. No information has been given on when flights will resume.

In Abu Dhabi, a missile struck a civilian vehicle in Al Bahyan, killing a Palestinian. In Fujairah, drone attacks caused fires in an industrial zone, with no reported injuries. Earlier incidents in the city had injured four people near the airport.

Since February 28, the UAE Ministry of Defence has recorded six deaths, including four civilians and two military personnel from a helicopter crash.

Iran claims its attacks on Gulf nations are justified due to the presence of US military bases. However, civilian infrastructure including airports, ports, and oil facilities has been hit. The UAE has faced the heaviest bombardment, with more than 1,800 drones and missiles targeted at it.

Other Gulf states including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have also intercepted drones and missiles. Saudi Arabia reported destroying 23 drones in multiple waves on Monday, while Qatar intercepted all drones entering its airspace. Kuwait’s airport radar was damaged in the attacks.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman condemned the “sinful attacks” and reaffirmed territorial defense. The GCC, UK, and Jordan jointly called for de-escalation.

Israel also launched strikes on Tehran, damaging hospitals and clinics, affecting civilians. Over 1,500 civilians have been reported dead in Iran due to ongoing attacks.
