The Chief Secretary of Malaysia, Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, has reinforced the message to civil servants that the forthcoming work-from-home (WFH) policy is not a time for relaxation. Initiating on April 15, the policy insists on achieving productivity equal to that of office work.
While speaking in Shah Alam, he indicated that remote working, known locally as BDR, should not be interpreted as leisure. He emphasized that officers are required to meet defined key performance indicators (KPIs) and remain accountable under rigorous monitoring by their superiors.
This WFH initiative is part of Malaysia's extensive civil service reform, aiming to prioritize measurable outcomes over mere physical presence. Officials are expected to exemplify discipline, integrity, and dedication to national leadership, including the Sultan, while effectively implementing government policies.
In light of economic issues, he also called on departments to minimize unnecessary costs like high electricity consumption, physical meetings, and international travel. Civil servants were further advised to engage responsibly on social media platforms, steering clear of sharing unverified information and adhering strictly to established regulations and laws.
