Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim affirmed that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted regarding the alleged document forgery that led FIFA to suspend seven naturalized football players from the national team.
This week, FIFA announced it would initiate a formal investigation into the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), also alerting authorities in five nations about possible criminal charges after denying FAM’s appeal against the players’ suspensions.
In response to this situation, FAM suspended its secretary-general last month and set up an independent committee to oversee the investigation. The association intends to escalate the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the need for a transparent inquiry but reiterated that FAM must be afforded the opportunity to defend itself. He stated, “Proceed with the investigation. That’s the directive. However, the process must continue as well,”
The seven players—Facundo Garces, Gabriel Arrocha, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, and Hector Hevel—received a ban of 12 months in September after FIFA uncovered that fraudulent documents enabled them to participate in an Asian Cup qualifying match against Vietnam.
The revelations sparked outrage across Malaysia, prompting fans and certain lawmakers to call for accountability towards FAM officials and government agencies involved in the citizenship documentation.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh indicated in parliament that the ministry cannot dismiss FAM officials, as any government interference might lead to a FIFA suspension. Such a suspension would impact not only the senior squad but also youth and women’s teams.
“I recognize the public’s frustration, but I must adhere to the process and the findings presented by FIFA concerning the seven players,” stated Yeoh, also noting a proposal to withhold further funding for FAM until the investigation, led by a respected former judge, is finalized.
FIFA’s appeals committee revealed discrepancies between the players' claims of having Malaysian-born grandparents and the birth certificates obtained, which differed notably from FAM’s submissions.
Both the Prime Minister and FAM have committed to a thorough and transparent investigation, aiming to uphold accountability while safeguarding the integrity of Malaysian football.
