The Malaysian government has unveiled plans to create a national strategic medical stockpile aimed at ensuring a consistent supply of medicines and medical devices. This initiative addresses challenges arising from the ongoing global energy crisis and aims to enhance the nation's healthcare resilience amid disruptions in supply chains.
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir noted that this initiative is part of broader medium- and long-term strategies, which include transitioning from raw resin materials to polymers for specific products. The minister also emphasized the need to develop a national medicine security policy through the MyMedSecure platform while enhancing local pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing.
He pointed out that the global energy crisis is impacting not just fuel and logistics, but also the availability of essential healthcare supplies. The rise in manufacturing and distribution costs, driven by shortages in crucial raw materials like active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), petroleum, and ethylene oxide gas, poses threats to healthcare systems.
In response to these challenges, the government plans to introduce the Special Access Pathway, a short-term measure to ensure the availability of critical medicines and devices. Additional initiatives include a centralized monitoring system for medicine inventories, diversifying import sources, activating emergency response protocols, and designating certain products as controlled goods. These strategies were outlined during a recent National Economic Action Council meeting, showcasing Malaysia's commitment to public health and economic stability amid global uncertainties.
