Man City 4-1 Dortmund as Foden nets brace and Haaland extends scoring run

Post by : Meena Hassan

Manchester City recorded a commanding 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad Stadium, moving to 10 points from four Champions League group matches while Dortmund slipped to 14th with seven points.

City set the tempo early. Phil Foden broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, finishing off a slick pass from Tijjani Reijnders. Seven minutes later Erling Haaland, who now has 27 goals in 17 games for club and country, made it 2-0 with a composed finish following an incisive assist from Jeremy Doku.

Foden wrapped up his brace in the 57th minute with a curling effort, his first two-goal game in the Champions League. "Happy it's not just Erling scoring goals," Guardiola said. "Phil was just fantastic."

Dortmund reduced the deficit when Waldemar Anton converted a free kick in the 72nd minute, a moment that lifted the travelling fans. City put the result beyond doubt with a stoppage-time strike from Rayan Cherki.

On the numbers, City outshot Dortmund on target nine to one, controlling possession and making use of the wide areas through Doku and Savinho. Savinho came close to a spectacular volley in the second half.

Dortmund coach Niko Kovac paid tribute to City’s performance: "They played a very clean style of football and deserved to win."

Haaland stretched his Champions League scoring run to five straight matches, becoming the first player to score in five consecutive games for three different clubs—Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Salzburg.

Reflecting on Haaland’s influence, Doku said: "He scored just one goal but is so much more than goals and assists. He provides so much and is so important."
