Manchester City looked set for an easy win at Craven Cottage, bursting ahead to a 5-1 lead against Fulham early into the second half. Goals from Erling Haaland, Phil Foden (who scored twice), Tijjani Reijnders, and an own goal by Sander Berge put City firmly in control.
Yet, Fulham came roaring back, led by substitute Samuel Chukwueze, who netted three quick goals, nearly leveling the score during stoppage time. Ultimately, City held their nerve to claim a 5-4 victory, sealing all three points in one of the season's most exhilarating Premier League games.
Haaland's goal was monumental, marking his 100th Premier League strike in just 111 appearances – a record-setting pace. Alongside his goal, he also provided two vital assists. Reflecting on the match, Haaland remarked, "I was close to scoring but then they made it 5-3. That’s football, it’s the beauty of the game."
Pep Guardiola addressed the scare with his usual wit, saying, "I’m so old, and the players don’t respect me! They shouldn’t treat their manager this way. It only happens in this league."
Following this match, Manchester City sits two points behind league leaders Arsenal, which may change depending on Arsenal's upcoming match against Brentford.
This match marked Fulham’s first nine-goal episode in a top-flight match since a 7-2 defeat at West Ham in 1968 and their first such home game since 1965. Under Guardiola, City has netted five or more goals in a match 41 times across 356 Premier League fixtures. This was also the first league victory for City while conceding four since December 1957, and it stands as the sixth Premier League match involving City with at least nine goals, a record that only Manchester United has surpassed with seven.
While City dazzled offensively, their defensive weaknesses were evident. Comparatively, Arsenal has conceded only seven goals in 13 matches, while City has leaked 16 in 14. Former striker Clinton Morrison pointed out, "There’s a defensive problem at Manchester City… you’d never see Arsenal leading 5-1 and letting it slip like that."
Despite these defensive setbacks, Guardiola remains hopeful, underlining the positives. "Every game offers new challenges for some players. There were many encouraging signs in the first half, scoring five goals and playing well," he mentioned. He indicated that this tense situation could enhance focus and resilience in upcoming matches.
The clash between Manchester City and Fulham will be remembered not just for the attacking flair and drama but also as a stark reminder that champions must solidify their defense to stay in the title race.
