Manchester City has finalized the acquisition of centre-back Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, securing a five-and-a-half-year contract. This signing is pivotal as City struggles to keep pace with Premier League frontrunners Arsenal.
While specific financial terms remain undisclosed, reports indicate the transfer fee is around £20 million (RM108.8 million). Guehi, 25, had only six months left on his contract at Crystal Palace.
His addition significantly strengthens City’s lineup, which has been affected by injuries to key defenders, including Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and John Stones. Guehi marks City’s second acquisition of the January transfer period, following the signing of winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth.
Hugo Viana, City’s director of football, commented, “Marc has consistently been one of the finest defenders in English football. We are ecstatic to welcome him to Manchester City. His youth, leadership qualities, and professional dedication are impressive, and he’s keen to develop further.”
This transfer is regarded as a significant victory for City, especially considering Guehi’s previous nearly completed move to Liverpool last year, which ultimately did not materialize. He also drew interest from prestigious European teams like Bayern Munich.
A product of Chelsea's youth system, Guehi made his move to Crystal Palace in 2021. Over the course of his tenure, he played 188 matches for the club, even earning the captaincy. He led Palace to their first FA Cup victory last season and contributed to their Community Shield success in August.
Guehi has made 26 appearances for the England national team since debuting in 2022, playing a crucial part in Euro 2024, where he missed only the quarter-final due to suspension.
“This transfer feels like a testament to all my efforts,” Guehi expressed. “Joining the best club in England with such a remarkable squad is a surreal experience.”
Guehi was not part of Palace’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland on Saturday. After the game, manager Oliver Glasner, who will depart at season’s end, criticized the club’s management for leaving the players feeling “entirely abandoned.”
Currently, City occupies the second position in the Premier League with 43 points from 22 matches, trailing Arsenal by seven points. Their upcoming schedule includes a Champions League match against Bodo/Glimt today, followed by a Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers this Saturday.
